I went to Bemidji State University, studied graphic design and
illustration. Did a really bad cartoon for the school paper. Played a
lot of Dungeons and Dragons. Wasted too much time there. I finally
moved down to the cities and married the girl I had a crush on since
second grade! I became a caricature artist out at Valleyfair, an
amusement park, which was a great and wonderful experience. I learned a
lot from the other artists, and gained a lot more confidence. I also
got the chance to work alongside my brother as well out there. I also
worked for a fair sized newspaper and got a chance to print some
editorial cartoons, and formed a couple of characters that turned into a
daily comic strip called "True North," which I'm still producing.
I also got the chance to draw illustrations for Kenzer & Co.; their
Hackmaster product, drawing hundreds of monsters! What a dream. I also
drew a Spacehack comic for their monthly magazine/comic, which is where I met
Erik Bouchard. Erik wrote me and offered to help write
some strips, which he did, and it was good. Erik and I even did a
spin-off of Spacehack, "Redshirts," but it was too close to Spacehack,
which was a copyright issue. Anyway, I lost the heart to draw
Spacehack, and Erik offered me a great opportunity to move my Flying
Ferret online comic from Geocities to his own server---and the rest, as
they say, is history. And, Erik and I decided to start a Webcomic
group--actually, it's more Erik's idea, but my brother Ross supplied the
name, and here we are: a great place for web artists/cartoonists to get
together.
Anyway, I eventually moved back to my hometown area. I got a job
designing t-shirts, posters, etc.; just graphic design stuff. It's okay
for now. Who knows what I'll do next. One dream is to own a local
comic/game shop and put on regular D&D games. This town would be ideal
for that. So, I still have my comic strip, and now with the new format
for Flying Ferret, I can keep that regularly updated.
I have a stepson, and three beautiful daughters, two dogs, a good-sized
house, and WAAY too many cats!
That's enough for you to know. Anything else would be boring.
